CASTLE PLAN

EDINBURGH CASTLE

RESERVOIRS

These large tanks held water for the use of the Castle's inhabitants.

Water became especially necessary for survival during times of seige, such as the Lang Seige (1571-3)

Indeed, it was the fact than David's Tower had collapsed through bombardment choking the main water supply, the Forewell, that forced Sir William Kirkcaldy of Grange to surrender to Regent Morton after three years of defiant resistance.

Kirkcaldy's support of Mary Queen of Scots' cause meant he was found guilty of treason and he hanged.
