one time this close allowed access to the
High School of the Canongate, and was known
as Veitch's Close until the early
nineteenth century after John Veitch,
a burgess who built a tenement here.
The Moorish effigy affixed above the entrance to Mid Common Close has given rise
to many urban legends, most prominently featuring the Moroccan adventures of
Andrew Gray, a youngest son of a local noble family.
